Define the Priority and Description for a Severity

When you add or edit a severity, you can set a Priority and enter a Description. The Priority setting defines the lowest value that is to be included in the severity range, and usually, the Description is used to indicate the importance of the alarms and events that are in the severity range (but it is possible to enter any text of up to 31 characters).

To define the Priority and Description:

  1. Display the Add Severity window (see Add a Severity Range) or the Modify Severity window as appropriate (see Edit a Severity Range).
  2. Use the Priority spin box to define the lowest value that is to be included in the severity range. The severity range will begin at this number and will end at the number prior to that of the next highest severity.
  3. The number that you enter has to be in the range 1-1000 and cannot be the same as any existing severity range.
  4. For example, if you are using the default severity ranges and add a severity with a Priority of 100, the severity you have created will have a range that begins at 100 and ends at 333 (the value before the start of the Medium severity range, which is 334). The 'Low' severity range will now run from 1-99 and not 1-333. (For information on the default ranges, refer to the introduction of Alarm and Event Severities.
  5. Enter a description of the severity range in the Description field. The description usually indicates the importance of the alarms and events that are within the severity range, but you can define any text you require. The Description can be text-only or a combination of numbers and text, but cannot consist entirely of numbers.
  6. The Description is shown on many displays, including the Alarm Banner and Alarms List.

When you have defined the Priority and/or Description, you can select the OK button to close the Add Severity window or the Modify Severity window. To apply the changes you have made, you will need to right-click on the system in the Server Status Tool, and then select the Apply Changes option from the context sensitive menu.

Alternatively, you can use the Add Severity window or the Modify Severity window to define or change more severity configuration settings (see Add a Severity Range or see Edit a Severity Range).
