Operating Systems

ClearSCADA can be installed on 32-bit or 64-bit computers. For more information, see the topics that are listed in the gray footer section at the bottom of this topic. Select the relevant entry to display the topic that you require.

Systems running on server class hardware have to use 64-bit server operating systems such as Windows Server 2012, or Windows Server 2008 Release 2. Server operating systems are designed for servicing entire systems rather than individual computers or small networks. For this reason, they are better suited for larger ClearSCADA systems with more than two clients.

Small stand-alone client-server systems running on desktop class (rather than server class) hardware need to use operating systems that are appropriate to the computer hardware being used.

To provide database access from ClearSCADA Mobile, the servers have to run on server class hardware with 64-bit operating systems.

Likewise, to run WebX, the WebX server and ClearSCADA server computers have to run on server class hardware with 64-bit operating systems (WebX client computers can use 32- or 64-bit operating systems).

For more information, see Recommended Server Configurations.

ATTENTION: Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 should not be used for servers with more than two clients. This is because the TCP/IP security measures in these operating systems can cause significant delays.

Server class computers and virtual machines (VMs) on server class computers should not be used to run ViewX in a day-to-day operational environment; instead, appropriate client machines should be used. Client machines often have a higher graphics hardware specification than server class computers. This higher graphics specification is required to run ViewX in a day-to-day operational environment, within which users might perform graphics-intensive tasks such as viewing complex Mimics, or working with multiple or floating documents (see Client PC Specifications).

The standard graphics hardware on server class computers and on VMs on server class computers may only be adequate for running ViewX for administrative purposes (such as performing initial system configuration and user account setup).
