Preparation

You typically add and configure points in Geo SCADA Expert once the outstation, PLC, scanner, or other device on which the point is located, has been created and configured in the database. This is because the point configuration typically requires you to select the name of that item on the Point Form. For information on the order in which you should configure items in the Geo SCADA Expert database, see the driver-specific documentation, and the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Advanced Drivers or the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Simple Drivers, as appropriate.

When you configure points in the database, many of the settings for those points need to correspond to the settings of the relevant measuring instruments or control devices on your system. Some settings are either fixed (incorporated into the design of the device), or are configured by an engineer. You need to have access to, or an understanding of, the settings of the devices on your system before you can configure the database points successfully.

You also need to be aware of the importance of each control device and measuring instrument in relation to other items on your system, so that you can assign appropriate severity levels for any alarms and events that are raised or logged for those devices.

If using Group Templates, Instances, and Abstract points, you need to be aware of which of the above are common to many of the ‘modules’ on your system, and which are specific to individual modules so that you can configure the Abstract points accordingly.
