Define the Login Settings for a Data Source

To access the Geo SCADA Expert database, ODBC clients have to log on via a User account. This can be any Geo SCADA Expert user account, including the Guest user, or can be a pre-defined user that is configured for the system DSN.

For security reasons, we recommend that you configure your ODBC connection so that it does not use the Username and Password settings. If you leave these settings blank, users on the ODBC Client will have to enter a user name and password each time the system DSN is used to access the Geo SCADA Expert database. This gives your system added security.

However, if required, you can set up your system DSN so that it uses a defined user name and password; there is no need to log on each time the system DSN is used. To configure this (less secure) set up for the system DSN:

  1. Display the ODBC Setup window Configure the ODBC DSN Settings.
  2. Use the Login fields and check box to determine the security for the System DSN:
    • Use the Username and Password fields to define the user credentials for logging in. The user credentials will be used for the DSN (unless there are other user credentials defined by the Third Party ODBC application, in which case, they override the DSN settings). This means that anyone with access to the DSN can access the Geo SCADA Expert database without needing their own Geo SCADA Expert user account.
    • If you leave the Username and Password settings empty (blank), you will be prompted to log on when you access the Geo SCADA Expert database via the DSN. The only exception to this rule is if you leave the Username and Password settings empty and also check the Allow Anonymous check box, as this will allow the DSN to access the Geo SCADA Expert database via the Guest user account.

    • Use the Allow anonymous check box to define whether the DSN can access the Geo SCADA Expert database via the Guest user account (anonymous log on).
      • If you select the Allow anonymous check box and leave the Username and Password fields blank, the DSN can access the Geo SCADA Expert database via the Guest user account.
      • If you clear the Allow anonymous check box, the DSN can only access the Geo SCADA Expert database if a user logs on manually or if a Username and Password are defined for the DSN (either in the DSN setup or in the Third Party ODBC application).

For security reasons, we recommend that you leave the Username and Password settings empty (blank) and clear the Allow Anonymous check box. This will configure the ODBC connection so that any user with access to the DSN has to provide log on details in order to access the Geo SCADA Expert database.
