Define the Message Send Timeout for an SMS Pager Channel

SMS Pager Channels have a Message Send Timeout property that you can use to define the amount of time the Pager Driver allows for the mobile telephone network to confirm that it has received a message from Geo SCADA Expert.

When the body of the SMS message has been sent, the Pager Driver waits for a response from the Service Provider. The response informs the Pager Driver that the SMS message has been received successfully. The Pager Driver will wait for a specific amount of time for this response—the Message Send Timeout time that is defined on the SMS Pager Channel Form.

The Message Send Timeout has a default setting of 5000 milliseconds, which is appropriate for many systems. But if you are experiencing failed SMS messages and there does not appear to be a problem with your communications network, you may wish to increase the Message Send Timeout. In some instances, the Service Provider's communication devices take longer than 5000 milliseconds to process an SMS message received from Geo SCADA Expert and respond with a receipt signal. Increasing the Message Send Timeout can provide the extra amount of time needed for such devices to respond before Geo SCADA Expert deems the message to have failed.

To define the Message Send Timeout for an SMS Pager Channel:

  1. Display the Pager Channel Form.
  2. Select the Channel tab.
  3. Enter the required amount of time (in milliseconds) in the Message Send Timeout field. If you need to increase the time, we recommend you make adjustments in 1000 milliseconds increments until you discover a timeout suitable for your system.

When you have defined the appropriate Message Send Timeout setting, you can either proceed with the Pager Channel configuration (see Configure an SMS Pager Channel), or you can save the configuration (see Saving Configuration Changes in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Core Configuration).
