Define the TCP/IP Port for Telnet Server
Each Telnet server has it's own unique TCP/IP port that can either be dynamically allocated by the operating system or can be pre-defined:
- If you want the operating system to allocate the port dynamically, you should specify a port number of zero.
- If you want to access the Telnet server through a firewall, you may have to specify the port number, so that the required port can be opened on the firewall. You should use 'user ports' in the range 1024 to 49151 inclusive (for more information, see http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers).
You define the Telnet port number for each driver via the Configuration tab of the Logging window that is available via the Modules display of the Geo SCADA Expert Server Status Tool (see Driver Logging). You can also define the port number via the registry settings (see Using a Registry Editor to Change Server Log File Settings).
For the Geo SCADA Expert Server, the port that is currently assigned to the Telnet server is shown on the Information display of the Geo SCADA Expert Server Status Tool. For drivers, the port number is shown in the Telnet Port column on the Modules display of the Geo SCADA Expert Server Status Tool.
You define the Telnet port for server monitoring via the Logging section of the Server Configuration Tool:
- Access the Geo SCADA Expert Server Configuration Tool.
- Log on (if required).
- Expand the required system and server.
- Expand the System Configuration branch of the tree-structure.
- Select the Logging option to display the Logging section.
- Scroll down to the Telnet Server section.
- Either:
- Select the Enabled check box to enable the Telnet Server feature.
The other fields in the section become available for use. - Clear the check box if the Telnet Server feature is not required.
You can ignore the rest of the steps in this topic.
- Select the Enabled check box to enable the Telnet Server feature.
- Use the Port field to define the TCP/IP port for the server's Telnet server.
If you use a fixed port for the Telnet server, you should enter the number of the port. You should use 'user ports' in the range 1024 to 49151 inclusive (for more information, see http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers).
If there is no port number specified (that is, it has the default setting of 0), the operating system will allocate a new port each time the server is restarted—you will need to determine which port the operating system has allocated each time you need to monitor the server. You can view the port numbers that have been allocated by the operating system by examining the General/Information display of the Geo SCADA Expert Server Status Tool.
You also need to specify a Telnet Port when a firewall is being used—you need to specify the port so that it can be opened on the firewall.
- Apply the changes to the server.
Alternatively, you can set the Telnet Port via the registry settings (see Using a Registry Editor to Change Server Log File Settings).
For other types of monitoring, you need to define the Telnet port via the registry settings (see Using a Registry Editor to Change Server Log File Settings).
