Define the Client Compression Settings for a ViewX Client Connection

You can use the Compress check box on the Client Configuration window to enable and disable data compression for the client - system connection.

The advantage of having compression enabled is that it reduces the amount of data that has to be sent, and so the data can be transferred more quickly. However, compression makes greater use of the processor and so there is an overhead on the server and client. For this reason, compression is usually only enabled on systems that are connected via slow networks (low bandwidth, typically less than 10Mb per second).

If you are aware that your system has clients with low bandwidth connections, you should also check that your Mimics, Lists and Trends are as simple as possible as complex documents require more data to be sent across the connection.

When using the Compress feature, you need to consider which servers in your system architecture are needed to compress and decompress the data (each server in your system has a Compress feature).

You can quantify the effects of the compression feature by examining the Server>Server Links statistics on the Server Status Tool see Server Links in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to the Server Status Tool.

To enable or disable the compression feature for a client:

  1. Display the Client Configuration Window.
  2. Select the Node tab for the required client - system connection.
  3. Select the Compress check box to enable the compression feature or clear it to disable the feature.
  4. Select the OK button to confirm your choice.

You can also define the Compression setting by editing the Systems.xml file manually Use the Systems.xml File to Set Up a ViewX Client Connection.
