Adjust the Configuration of any Points that Cause a High Load
A possible cause of deficient performance on a Geo SCADA Expert system is that of inadequate client performance (see Diagnose Client Performance Problems in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to the Server Status Tool). One of the causes of inadequate performance is high load on the server.
You can use the statistics that are displayed in Lists and Status displays to identify any scanners that are causing a high loading on the Geo SCADA Expert system.
For those scanners that have a high load, use the Points List to identify the point(s) that are causing the high load.
High load is typically caused by a point updating at too frequent a rate.
Where a point on a simple driver is causing a high load:
- If many points on a scanner are causing a high load, you might need to:
- Adjust the Scan Rate of the scanner.
Or:
- Move those points onto a separate scanner, and set that scanner to have a lower scan rate.
- Adjust the Scan Rate of the scanner.
- If historic data is being logged for a point, you might need to decrease the frequency with which that data is logged.
- If point values are logged if they change significantly, you might need to increase the Significant Change deadband—the amount by which the point value has to change in order for the value to be updated in the Geo SCADA Expert database. If need be, adjust the value in the Deadband field on the Point Form. Significant Change is supported by several simple drivers.
- If fluctuating changes of state are raising and clearing alarms, you might want to increase the Hysteresis—the amount by which an analog point’s value has to decrease below a high limit, or increase above a low limit, for an alarm to be cleared.
- If momentary changes in state are causing a high load, you might want to increase the Persistence setting for a digital point. Adjust this setting using the Persistence field on the relevant Point Form. Be aware that a sudden increase in momentary changes in state might indicate an abnormal condition elsewhere. Ensure that the hardware, plant, and instrumentation are checked at a suitable time to make sure that no underlying hardware problem that is causing the sudden increase. Persistence is supported by many simple drivers.
- If none of the above checks and configuration changes have cleared the high load caused by the point, check the following equipment for any faults:
- Hardware
- Plant
- Instrumentation.
