Define the System Name and Type for a Client - System Connection

In the Client Configuration window, you assign a name to each system (database) to which the client is to connect. The System Name that you assign to a connection is purely used to label that system on the client machine; it does not rename the system at the server or on any other client.

You typically assign the same name to a system on each of the clients that connect to it, but you can choose to use different names on a per client basis if required. For example, 2 clients can access the same database, but the name of the system could be different on each client (even though both clients access the same database).

You also need to assign a Type to each system connection, to define which system data is available to the client.

To define the system name and type for a system on a ViewX client or third-party client:

  1. Display the Client Configuration Window for the connection that you want to add or edit.
  2. Enter the name of the system in the System Name field. The name that you enter will be shown as the name of the system in ViewX on the client that you are configuring.
  3. Use the Type combo box to choose to the type of system to which the client will connect. This setting determines which features are available via the client and you can choose from:
    • Geo SCADA Expert ServerAllows the client to access the Geo SCADA Expert database, OPC data, OPC alarm and event data, and OPC historic data.
    • OPC Data Server—Allows a ViewX client to access OPC data on a third-party OPC server.

If you are configuring a connection between a ViewX client or third-party client and a Geo SCADA Expert server, you should select the Geo SCADA Expert Server option. This option provides access to the Geo SCADA Expert database(s), OPC data, OPC alarm and event data, and OPC historic data.

If you are configuring a connection between a ViewX client and a third-party OPC server, you should configure a separate system for each OPC server (see ViewX Client - Third Party OPC Server Connections). For each of these connections, you should select the OPC Data Server option.

The OPC Alarm Server and OPC Historic Server options that were available in previous releases of Geo SCADA Expert and ClearSCADA are no longer supported.

You can also define the System Name and Type settings by editing the Systems.xml file manually (see Use the Systems.xml File to Set Up a ViewX Client Connection).
