Minimum Configuration
As a minimum, for a DNP3 outstation to become functional (online), you need to configure the following settings, and then put the outstation In Service and save the configuration:
- The outstation Address (DNP3 tab)
- The Set to which the outstation belongs (Outstation tab)
- The Shared properties of a shared outstation (Shared tab).
ATTENTION: Many DNP3 Shared outstations support ‘Heartbeating’. Heartbeating in DNP3 uses the Data Link command ‘Request Link Status’. Be aware that outstation devices need to support simultaneous communication on both channels from the same master (Geo SCADA Expert) in order to support Heartbeating. Please consult the DNP3 outstation vendor’s documentation to check whether such simultaneous communication is supported, before using Heartbeating on the DNP3 outstations on your system. Attempts to use Heartbeating on outstations that do not support such simultaneous communication may cause erroneous behavior.
- The Host Address and Port of any network connected outstations (Network tab). (Port number 20000 is the TCP and UDP port that is registered for DNP3 use with the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority).)
- If the outstation communicates via PSTN or has PSTN fallback, the Telephone Number of the site on which the outstation is located (PSTN tab).
This will result in a functional DNP3 outstation that uses the default configuration settings.
