What is WITS?
WITS is the acronym used for the Worldwide Industrial Telemetry Standards (formerly 'Water Industry Telemetry Standards'), a set of telemetry standards and protocols first developed by UK water industry companies. The standards were created to provide greater interoperability between Field Devices and Master Stations from different manufacturers. They are now supported by many vendors, including Schneider Electric.
Geo SCADA Expert's DNP3 WITS driver enables Geo SCADA Expert to communicate with devices using the WITS-DNP3 protocol (one of the Worldwide Industrial Telemetry Standards). The standard builds on the DNP3 protocol to satisfy specific functional requirements of the utilities industries.
Field Devices and Master Stations can only be sold as WITS verified if they pass a series of extensive tests that are set by the WITS Protocol Standards Association (WITS PSA). These tests have to be witnessed and signed off by other vendors of verified WITS Master Stations (for Field Device tests) or WITS Field Devices (for Master Station tests). More information on the WITS PSA test specification is available on the WITS website: http://www.witsprotocol.org .
WITS Self-certified devices have only been tested by vendors using their own test equipment. These tests do not involve any third party.
Geo SCADA Expert (formerly ClearSCADA) versions 71 and above are WITS verified for WITS version 1.1. Geo SCADA Expert also supports WITS versions 1.0, 1.2, 1.3, and 3.0, but is not WITS verified for these versions.
