Assign a Different Area of Interest to an Item’s Alarms and Events

By default, when the Area of Interest feature is enabled on a Geo SCADA Expert system, every alarm or event that can be generated on that system is assigned to the World Area of Interest.

To limit access to alarms and events for a particular database item, you can assign its alarms and events to a different Area of Interest.

Ensure that the relevant users have access to the Areas of Interest that are assigned to a database item (see Assign a Different Area of Interest to a User).

To assign a different Area of Interest:

  1. Display the Form for the item (see Display a Form).
  2. Perform one of the following, as appropriate:
    • If assigning Areas of Interest to an item other than a Point, go to step 3.
    • If assigning Areas of Interest to a Point, go to step 4.
  3. On the <Item Type> tab (for instance, the Channel tab on a Channel Form), use the Area of Interest field to specify the Area of Interest that is to be associated with any alarms or events that are generated for that item.

    Now go to step 7.

  4. On the <Point Type> tab on a Point Form:
    1. An Area of Interest field is displayed near the top of the tab. Use the field to specify the Area of Interest for point alarms or events other than those for which a separate Area of Interest exists on the Point Form. Such alarms and events are typically known as 'non-state-related' alarms and events.

Alarms and events for which a separate Area of Interest field exists include those mentioned in the rest of this procedure. Additionally, should a driver support further Area of Interest field(s), the existence of such fields should be mentioned in the relevant driver guides.

    2. Use the Area of Interest field(s) within the Alarm Limits or States section of the tab to specify the Area of Interest for any alarms or events associated with the point’s value or state changes.
    3. On analog-type points, use the Area of Interest field within the No Change section of the tab to specify the Area of Interest for any alarms or events associated with the point’s value not changing over a defined time period.
  5. On the Control tab of an output point, use the Area of Interest field within the Actions section of the tab to specify the Area of Interest for any alarms or events associated with the point’s control actions.
  6. On the Control Checks tab of an output point or Pulse Action, use the Area of Interest field to specify the Area of Interest for any alarms or events associated with the point or Pulse Action's control checks. (For more information, see Configuring Control Checks Settings.)
  7. Save the configuration.
  8. Repeat the above steps for any other database items for which you want alarms and events allocated to a different Area of Interest to the one that is currently assigned. (Remember that you can only assign an Area of Interest to which you have access.)

If you restrict the events associated with User Account activity to a particular Area of Interest, ensure that you include that Area of Interest in the User Account's Area of Interest Filter field (see Assign a Different Area of Interest to a User).
