Configuring Polygon Regions

To create and configure an item in the database, you need to be logged on via a User Account that:

To create polygon regions you need to be familiar with the GeoJSON format for encoding geographic data structures. For more information about GeoJSON refer to the GeoJSON Specification, also the website geojson.io can be used as an aid in creating polygons.

To configure a new or existing polygon region:

  1. Display the Database Bar (see Display an Explorer Bar).
  2. Double-click on the Region entry in the Database Bar (if you are logged on via a User Account that has the Double Click Edits Documents feature enabled).
    The associated Form is displayed.

  3. By default the Region combo box displays the Circle type of region. Use the combo box to select the Polygon type of region.
    A Points field is displayed.

  4. Enter the required definition for the polygon region directly into the Points field.

GeoJSON complexity can impact on server calculation time and client display time. We recommend that regions are as simple as possible to aid performance.

You can include polygon regions on maps. As such, in addition to specifying the coordinates of the polygon, consider also including other settings to specify properties such as the display name, fill opacity, and stroke (line) width.

Remember to include a name for the region if it is to appear on a Map Set (otherwise the Full Name of the Region database item will be shown on the map's Layer menu). For more information, see Example Polygon Regions.

All numeric location / region coordinates in location strings use the English decimal point (a dot).

Due to the nature of projecting the globe onto a 2D map, the lines drawn to represent a Polygon Region are an approximation. The closer to the pole and the longer any given line (that is not exactly orientated north-south), the greater the degree of inaccuracy.

  5. Select the Include Region in Alarm Redirection when Matching User Location against Alarm Region check box if you want to include this region in alarm redirection. (This is the default setting.)

Clear the check box if you do not want to include this region in alarm redirection.

This setting only affects alarm redirection that uses the By Matching User Location against Alarm Region scheme; the other alarm redirection schemes are unaffected (see Specify Whether to Redirect Alarms to Users According to Geographical Criteria).
