Configuring DNP3 Devices in Geo SCADA Expert

On a Geo SCADA Expert system, you configure the Geo SCADA Expert database so that entries in the database correspond to the plant, control devices and measuring instruments on your system. This section summarizes the database items that you need to configure to represent the DNP3 devices on your system.

In order to represent any DNP3 devices, the DNP3 Driver has to be installed and running on the Geo SCADA Expert servers on your system. When the DNP3 driver is first installed, a system administrator needs to define the server settings for the driver (see Configuring DNP3 Server Settings).

When you configure DNP3 items in the Geo SCADA Expert database, many of the settings for those items need to correspond to the settings of the relevant DNP3 devices on your system. Some settings are either fixed (incorporated into the design of the DNP3 outstation) or are configured by an engineer. You need to have access to, or an understanding of, the settings of the DNP3 devices on your system before you can configure the DNP3 database items successfully.

For instance, you need to know the DNP3 Event Class(es) that each DNP3 outstation supports.

Each DNP3 device has a Profile document that describes what functionality is provided. Use the document alongside this DNP3 Driver Guide to configure the settings for your devices.

The items that you need to configure vary, depending whether you require a master device (see DNP3 Master Configuration), or a Slave device (see DNP3 Slave Configuration).

You also need to be aware of which optional features are required for each DNP3 item. The features include:

You can also use core Geo SCADA Expert features with DNP3 database items, including Lists, Actions, and Mimics. For actions that are specific to the DNP3 driver, see Using DNP3 Specific Actions. For further information on actions and details on Lists and Mimics, see the core documentation.
