The IEC 60870-5 KEMA driver supports the following types of outstation:
- IEC 60870-5 KEMA Direct Outstation—An outstation that is permanently connected to the Geo SCADA Expert server via, for example, a cable, network, or a continuous radio signal.
- An IEC 60870-5 KEMA Direct Outstation has one Common Address, which Geo SCADA Expert uses when it interrogates the outstation for data. If the system setup allows, an IEC 60870-5 KEMA Direct Outstation can optionally be configured with PSTN fallback so that it can still communicate with the Geo SCADA Expert server if direct communications fail.

Depending on the system setup, an IEC 60870-5 KEMA Direct Outstation can belong to an IEC 60870-5 Direct or Switched Outstation Set.
- IEC 60870-5 KEMA Shared Outstation—An IEC 60870-5 KEMA Outstation that can use either of two channels. Each outstation in a Shared Set can communicate via either channel.
If the system setup allows, an IEC 60870-5 KEMA Shared Outstation can be configured with PSTN fallback so that it can still communicate with the Geo SCADA Expert server if direct communications fail.
ATTENTION: Many IEC 60870-5 Shared outstations support ‘Heartbeating’. Heartbeating in IEC 60870-5 uses the Data Link command ‘Request Link Status’. Be aware that outstation devices need to support simultaneous communication on both channels from the same master (Geo SCADA Expert) in order to support Heartbeating. Before using Heartbeating on the IEC 60870-5 outstations on your system, consult the IEC 60870-5 outstation vendor’s documentation to check whether such simultaneous communication is supported. Attempts to use Heartbeating on outstations that do not support such simultaneous communication may cause erroneous behavior.
IEC 60870-5 KEMA PSTN Outstation— Supports communications with Geo SCADA Expert over PSTN or GSM links.
For each IEC 60870-5 KEMA compliant outstation on your system, you need to configure IEC 60870-5 KEMA Outstation of the appropriate type in the Geo SCADA Expert database. You configure the properties of each outstation using the fields on the appropriate IEC 60870-5 KEMA Outstation Form.
Each Form has several tabs. This section explains the properties on the on the KEMA and PSTN tab on each Outstation Form.

The PSTN tab is available on all KEMA compliant outstations. Use the PSTN tab to:
- Enable KEMA Direct and Shared outstations to use PSTN for fallback communication, if the system setup allows.
- Specify the Common PSTN Properties (see Define an Outstation’s PSTN Properties in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Advanced Drivers)
- Configure any Dial In Lines (see Define Dial In Line Properties on a PSTN Outstation in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Advanced Drivers).
- Configure the Dial In Overactive Properties (see Define Dial In Overactive Properties on a PSTN Outstation in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Advanced Drivers).
KEMA outstations support up to eight Dial In Lines to report alarm data to Geo SCADA Expert.
