Which Map Sources does ClearSCADA Support?

ClearSCADA enables you to display a variety of maps (see About ClearSCADA Maps). You can also use markers to show assets on the maps (see About Map Markers).

This topic provides an overview of the map sources that ClearSCADA supports.

Map Source Use as Base Layer? Use as Overlay? Comments
ArcGIS

For this map source, ClearSCADA interfaces with ArcGIS Online, a cloud-based mapping service.

Bing

ClearSCADA provides basic integration with Bing Maps via OpenLayers. This integration excludes features provided by different versions of maps.

To access the source maps, you require an API Key.

In ClearSCADA you can specify the type of map that is to form the base map layer (for example 'Road' or 'Aerial').

OpenStreetMap

This map source is only suitable for light use across a system as there are restrictions on the use of OpenStreetMap servers.

When using the map source, ensure that you abide by the requirements laid out in the provider's tile usage policy (see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tile_usage_policy).

WMS

ClearSCADA provides support to request map images using OpenGIS Web Map Service (WMS) version 1.3.0.

To access the source maps, you have to specify the URL of the WMS source from which you want to obtain the map data.

Some WMS map providers allow free access to various public map images, whereas other providers require you to register. Attempts to access map images from the latter without providing valid registration credentials will fail. To access such online map images, you have to specify the username and password that enables you to access the map source.

You can optionally append additional syntax to the end of a map request query, in order to request optional or non-standard map implementations. To do this, you specify the required syntax in a Custom Data field; when doing so, ensure that you use syntax that is valid for the WMS protocol. Details of the syntax are outside of the scope of the ClearSCADA documentation.

ClearSCADA only retains the images of online maps in memory for the amount of time that they are in use. As such, there are no additional disk space requirements to those already recommended for ClearSCADA (see Recommended Server Configurations in the ClearSCADA Installation Guide).

For online mapping services users will need a continuous internet connection.
