Convert a Group Instance into a Group

You can convert a Group Instance into a normal Group. This is useful if you no longer want a Group Instance to refer to a Group Template, but still require the configuration data in the Group Instance.

To convert a Group Instance into a normal Group:

  1. Display the Database Bar (see Display an Explorer Bar).
  2. In the Database Bar, locate the Group Instance that you want to convert to a normal Group.
  3. Ensure that the Group Instance does not contain any database items (such as Abstract Items) that are not supported by ‘normal’ Groups.

Do not delete the Group Instance’s reference to its Group Template, as this will remove the items in the Group Instance.

  4. In the Database Bar, right-click on the Group Instance that you want to convert.
A context sensitive menu is displayed.
  5. Select the Convert To option.
    A further menu is displayed.
  6. Select the Group option.
  7. Select Yes at the prompt to confirm that you want to convert the Group Instance.
The Group Instance is converted into a Group. The properties of the items in the Group are now configurable locally, as they are no longer inherited from any Group Template.

If the conversion is attempted on a Group Instance that contains database items that are not supported by ‘normal’ Groups, Geo SCADA Expert generates a diagnostic message.

Convert the unsupported item into a type of item that is supported by a normal Group, then repeat the above steps to convert the Group Instance. (You cannot delete an item in a Group Instance directly, unless the item has been added locally to the Group Instance.)
