Create and Configure an Intelligent Electronic Device (IED)
You use an IED database item to represent a specific IED in the substation with which Geo SCADA Expert is to interact using the IEC 61850 protocol. You have to create one IED database item per IED with which the Geo SCADA Expert is to interact on the substation. Before configuring an IED database item, you have to configure the SCL database item with which the IED database item is associated. For more information see Create and Configure an SCL File.
To create and configure an IED in the database:
- Right-click on the SCL File database item to display a context-sensitive menu. Select the Create or Update IEDs pick action to create one IED database item per IED that is defined by the contents of the imported SCL file. The group name is defined by the IED name.
- Either collapse and expand the hierarchy or press F5 to refresh the database.
- Click on the SCL File database folder where you have created the IED database items.
The IED database items that have been created are displayed.
After creating the database items, configure the properties of each IED. To configure the properties of an IED database item:
- Display the Form for the database item (see Display a Form).
- Configure the properties as required:
- On the IED tab, ensure that the In Service check box is selected to make the IED active. By default this option is selected (see Placing an Item In Service).
- The SCL File field displays the path of the SCL file that this database item represents.
- The IED Name field displays the name of the IED that this database item represents. This field is editable. But it is not recommended to edit as it should match with the IED Name in the SCL file. If you want to edit the IED Name then you have to change the IED Name in the SCL file as well.
Select the Compare to device configuration check box to compare the configuration of the IED to which the Geo SCADA Expert is connected with the configuration in the SCL file that defines the IED in the Geo SCADA Expert database. If they do not match then the connection to the IED fails and will not progress further.
Use the Reestablishment Interval to define how often the server attempts to establish communications with a failed IED. For further information, and an example of how the Reestablishment Interval is used, see Establishment Phase.
- In the Alarm/Event Logging section, in the Severity drop-down box, select the severity level as required (see Defining Severities)
We recommend that you create the IED database item automatically, rather than manually. If you create the IED database item manually, you have to configure the properties manually. The configuration settings will be internally validated automatically and have to match the SCL file configuration, otherwise a diagnostic message might get displayed or the database item might not communicate successfully with the IED.
