Procedure for Configuring a Digital Point’s States

To Define the Point States for a Digital Point:

  1. Display the Form for the digital point that you want to configure.
  2. Select the Digital Point tab.
(If you are configuring the states for another point that uses digital-type processing, select the appropriately named <Point Type> tab.)
  3. Scroll to the States section of the tab.
  4. Use the relevant Severity combo box to define what is generated when the point enters the selected state. (For example, to specify the severity associated with State 0, select the Severity combo box in row 0.)

Choose from None, Event, Alarm, or Fleeting.

For options other than None, define the severity of the event or alarm in the adjacent combo box (see step 5).

For further information on Severity options, see Defining Severities in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Core Configuration.

  5. Use the combo box to the right of the Severity combo box to define the importance of the alarm, fleeting alarm, or event.

The figure above shows Geo SCADA Expert’s default options—these will probably have been replaced by a customized range on your system—select the appropriate level of importance from the available options.

  6. Either:
    • Enter a description of the selected state in the Description field.

      Or:

    • Choose a description from the Description combo box.
(To adjust the entries in this list to more suitable ones for your system, see Define Descriptions for Numeric Point States in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Server Administration.)

Ensure that you choose or define a suitable description for each point state, as these are shown on displays such as Mimics, allowing operators to understand the significance of each state. If you leave the description for a particular state at its default description, for example, State 1, Geo SCADA Expert will display that description when the point is in that state, which will not be very indicative of the relevance of the state.

If the Dictionary feature is used on your system, you can prefix the string in Description field, in order for that string to be replaced with another term, when displayed in a List or on a Mimic, in ViewX. For more information, see Introduction to the Geo SCADA Expert Translation Dictionary in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to the Translation Dictionary.

By default, point states are shown in black text on displays, such as Lists, unless:

    • The point is in an alarm state (in which case the state is displayed in the corresponding severity color)
    • Another status, such as an Override, takes precedence over a non-alarm state (in which case the state is displayed in the color that indicates that status).

You can change the color that your system uses for the ‘Normal’ state (black by default), using the Color Palette (see Use the Color Palette to Define a Custom System Color in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Core Configuration).

If you want to associate the state with a custom color when neither of the above situations is in effect, proceed to step 7.

If you want the state to be associated with the default color to indicate a ‘Normal’ state (black text, by default), go straight to step 11.

  7. Select the browse button next to the Color field.
A Reference browse window is displayed.

  8. Use the Reference browse window features to locate the custom color that you want to associate with the state.

You can only associate a limit with a custom color if you have pre-configured custom colors available (see Defining a Custom State Color in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Core Configuration).

  9. Select the relevant custom color.
  10. Select the OK button.
The Reference browse window is closed and the name of the custom color is displayed in the Color field. When the point enters the selected state, its state value will be shown in the custom color.

(If required, you can select the Go To hyperlink that is adjacent to the Color field to display the Color Form for the selected custom color.)

  11. Use the Override check box to determine whether the digital point can be overridden into the selected state.

The Override check boxes for each state are only available if the Override feature is enabled for the point (see Define whether a Digital Point can be Overridden).

    Either:

    • Select the check box to allow operators to override the digital point into the selected state.

    • Clear the check box if operators are not permitted to override the digital point into the selected state.
  12. Repeat steps 3-11 for each digital point state.
  13. If the Area of Interest feature is enabled on your system, an Area of Interest field is displayed in the States section of the tab. Use the field to Specify the Area of Interest Associated with a Point’s State-Related Alarms and Events.
  14. Save the configuration.
