Basic Configuration Procedures

You can only configure items in the ClearSCADA database if your User Account is assigned the Configure Database feature and allocated the relevant security permissions (see Database Security).

You configure some types of database item by specifying properties on the relevant configuration Form (see Working with Forms). With other types of item, you configure the item using an Editor (see Displaying an Editor).

Sections within this guide explain the procedures for:

In order for outstations and their component parts (such as points) to communicate correctly with the ClearSCADA server, their database configuration has to be stored at the outstation. With some types of outstation, you can configure the data within ClearSCADA and then download that data to the outstation (see Downloading Configuration Changes). With outstations that do not support downloading, care needs to be taken to ensure that the same settings are configured in both the outstation and the ClearSCADA database.

WARNING

UNEXPECTED BEHAVIOR OF APPLICATION

Do not make further configuration changes to an outstation or any of its dependants while a download is in progress to that outstation. Performing such changes may result in partially updated or corrupt configuration being downloaded to the outstation, or configuration changes not being flagged for download.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage.

Where a database item references another item (for instance, a point references the outstation on which it is located), you can display a list of those references (see Displaying a Database Item’s References). Be aware of these references should you move, copy, or delete an item in your database.
