Configuring IEC 60870-5 KEMA Compliant Devices in Geo SCADA Expert

On a Geo SCADA Expert system, you configure the Geo SCADA Expert database so that entries in the database correspond to the plant and measuring instruments on your system. This section summarizes the database items that you need to configure to represent the KEMA compliant devices with which Geo SCADA Expert is to communicate using the IEC 60870-5-101 protocol.

To represent any such devices, the IEC 60870-5 driver (including the KEMA component) has to be installed and running on the Geo SCADA Expert servers on your system (see Confirm that the Required Geo SCADA Expert Components are Installed).

When you configure IEC 60870-5 KEMA items in the Geo SCADA Expert database, many of the settings for those items need to correspond to the settings of the relevant KEMA compliant devices on your system. Some settings are either fixed (incorporated into the design of the device), or are configured by an engineer. You need to have access to, or an understanding of, the settings of the devices on your system before you can configure the IEC 60870-5 KEMA database items successfully.

Each IEC 60870-5 device, including Geo SCADA Expert, has an interoperability Profile document that describes what functionality is provided. For each KEMA compliant device that you want Geo SCADA Expert to communicate with, using the IEC 60870-5-101 protocol, refer to that device’s interoperability Profile document. This allows you to compare the supported features of that device against the IEC features that Geo SCADA Expert supports (and that are listed as such in Geo SCADA Expert's interoperability Profile document). You also need to be aware of the address settings and any options that are set on your devices. You can then refer to this Geo SCADA Expert Guide to the IEC 60870-5 KEMA Driver and the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to the IEC 60870-5 Driver for information on how to configure those features and options in Geo SCADA Expert.

You also need to be aware of the optional features that are required for each IEC 60870-5 KEMA item. These features include:

You can also use core Geo SCADA Expert features with IEC 60870-5 KEMA database items, including Lists, Actions, and Mimics. For each KEMA compatible device, you need to configure:

  1. IEC 60870-5 or IEC 60870-5 KEMA channels of the appropriate type:
    • An IEC 60870-5 Direct Channel to represent each direct serial or network-connected communication connection between an IEC 60870-5 outstation and the Geo SCADA Expertserver (see Configuring an IEC 60870-5 Channel in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to the IEC 60870-5 Driver).

      For KEMA compliant devices with which Geo SCADA Expert communicates using the IEC 60870-5-101 serial based protocol, you need to configure one channel per serial connection.

    • An IEC 60870-5 KEMA PSTN Channel to represent each telephone line connection between the Geo SCADA Expert server and the KEMA outstations on your system (see Configuring an IEC 60870-5 KEMA PSTN Channel).
  2. Either:
    • An IEC 60870-5 Set of the appropriate type for each group of KEMA Direct or Shared outstations, (see Configuring an IEC 60870-5 Outstation Set in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to the IEC 60870-5 Driver).

      Or:

    • An IEC 60870-5 KEMA PSTN Set to define each group of KEMA PSTN outstations.
  3. An IEC 60870-5 KEMA Outstation of the appropriate type to configure one or more IEC 60870-5 KEMA Outstations in Geo SCADA Expert (see Configuring an IEC 60870-5 KEMA Outstation).

  4. IEC 60870-5 KEMA Points of the appropriate type, (see Points Used on IEC 60870-5 KEMA Outstations).

To minimize the time that it takes to configure the required database items, you may want to configure them in the order listed above, as outstation configuration requires you to specify a set, and point configuration requires you to specify an outstation, and so on. (With PSTN outstations, the association with a channel is only made during runtime.)
