Introduction to the In-Database Translation Dictionary
Intended Audience
This guide is designed for system administrators who are setting up and managing the Geo SCADA Expert In-Database Translation Dictionary.
Document Scope
The guide explains how to create and manage an In-Database Translation Dictionary.
About the In-Database Translation Dictionary
You can replace user-created text in Geo SCADA Expert with text translations. To do this, you create an In-Database Translation Dictionary which contains the user-created text and associated translated text. You then mark the user-created text in Geo SCADA Expert that you want to replace and Geo SCADA Expert will perform a search and replace using the In-Database Translation Dictionary.
For example, you might want to replace text in a Mimic with a translation of the text in another language. In Geo SCADA Expert, you mark the text you want to replace with a @ prefix. Geo SCADA Expert will then search for the marked text in the dictionary, retrieve the translated text associated with it, and then replace the marked text with the translated text.
You can use the In-Database Translation Dictionary in the following:
- Mimics
- Trends
- Query Lists
- Data Grids
- Data Tables
- Alarm Severities
- Alarms List Column Entries
- Point State Descriptions.
You can create two types of Translation Dictionary in Geo SCADA Expert: a File Translation Dictionary and an In-Database Translation Dictionary. You can use either of them to perform the search and replace for marked text. However, you can only enable one type of dictionary for use at a time. This guide describes the In-Database Translation Dictionary, which is the type of translation dictionary that we recommend you use
Some of the advantages of using the In-Database Translation Dictionary are:
- The dictionary is part of the Geo SCADA Expert database
- You can create and maintain the dictionary in a Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet by using an Excel add-in program; this allows you to organize the dictionary easily. The Excel add-in program also checks the text entries for correct formatting
- Geo SCADA Expert automatically synchronizes the In-Database Translation Dictionary between servers
Before you can create or update an In-Database Translation Dictionary, you must first:
- Ensure that the Geo SCADA Expert server is running
- Ensure that the dictionary is enabled in Geo SCADA Expert (for more information about how to do this, see the Translation Dictionary Guide in the Geo SCADA Expert online Help).
- Ensure that you have a user account with the correct privileges to update the dictionary (for more information about user accounts, see the Geo SCADA Expert online Help)
- Ensure that you are logged in to Geo SCADA Expert.
