Using Geo SCADA Expert to Change Field Device Configuration

If your WITS Field Device supports configuration download, you can use Geo SCADA Expert to make alterations to certain configuration settings on the Field Device. The settings you can alter are those defined in the incremental configuration file (see Incremental Configuration File - Content and Syntax)

If you want to make changes to the bulk configuration, including adding or deleting points, see Using a Configuration Application to Change Field Device Configuration.

When you use Geo SCADA Expert to make configuration changes, you need to download the updated configuration to the Field Device.

Many engineers find this to be a preferable way of configuring WITS Field Devices, as Geo SCADA Expert provides access to the incremental configuration settings that are supported by the Field Device. (Some Field Device Configuration Applications only allow you to make limited configuration changes).

You can find out if your WITS Field Device supports configuration download by examining its Device Profile (see Display a WITS Device Profile). Geo SCADA Expert also uses the Device Profile to determine which configuration settings are supported, applicable, and available.

To use Geo SCADA Expert to change the configuration of a WITS Field Device:

  1. Log on to ViewX via a user account that has the Configure permission.
  2. In the Database Bar,display the configuration Form or Editor for the WITS item or Time Profile you want to change. Use Form or Editor to adjust the configuration as required, and then select Save.

To add application programs, right-click on an appropriate Group or Group Template, select Create New and then select DNP3 and then select WITS and then select WITS Application Program. You will then need to import the appropriate program file into the Application Program item (see Import Program).

To add profiles, Configuring Time Profiles.

You can add/remove profiles and application files up to the limit defined in the Device Profile (see WITS Device Profiles)

To remove a profile or application, right-click on it and select Delete. Confirm the deletion at the prompt.

To remove a point from the bulk configuration, use the Field Device's Configuration Application. The bulk configuration then needs to be imported or uploaded into Geo SCADA Expert. You also need to delete the point in Geo SCADA Expert (if you do not delete the point in Geo SCADA Expert, a configuration error is detected, informing you that the point does not exist). If you delete a point in Geo SCADA Expert without deleting it from the bulk configuration, Geo SCADA Expert will download the point as off-scan (and the point will still exist in the Field Device).

  3. Right-click on the relevant Outstation item and select Download Configuration (WITS Outstation). When the dialog box appears, choose Changed Configuration Only so that only the changes are downloaded (as opposed to the entire configuration). Geo SCADA Expert sends the updated configuration to the Field Device.
  4. You can monitor the status of the download by using the Outstation List and the Events List.

For information on the Outstation List, see Display and Use Lists in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Lists.

For information on the Events List, see Display the Events for an Item or Group in the Geo SCADA Expert Guide to Lists.

  5. Inspect the Field Device to validate that it is working as expected.
