Differences Between the Virtual ViewX Client and ViewX

Web clients in Geo SCADA Expert are available as either:

• The newer web server, Virtual ViewX, which is hosted using Internet Information Services (IIS) and installed separately from the Geo SCADA Expert server.
• The Original WebX server, built into each Geo SCADA Expert server instance.

This topic describes the differences between Virtual ViewX and ViewX.

Many of the functions and displays that are available from a ViewX client are also available from a Virtual ViewX client:

• Object Menu
• Alarms
• Events
• Mimics
• Lists
• Trends
• Reports
• Status Displays
• Favorites

The main differences between a Virtual ViewX client and ViewX are:

• All of the Virtual ViewX clients that run on a Virtual ViewX server use the same mode of operation. This can be either:
  • Limited Virtual ViewX/Operator mode (the default). With this mode, each Virtual ViewX client provides operator, rather than configuration access to the system. (Engineers have to use a ViewX client to make any configuration changes.)
  • Full Virtual ViewX mode. With this mode, other than the differences listed below, each Virtual ViewX client provides the same level of access as a ViewX client.
• To access the Geo SCADA Expert database from a Virtual ViewX client, you have to log on to the client using a valid Geo SCADA Expert User Account. (Virtual ViewX clients do not support the Guest user or Super User accounts.)

• The ViewX Ribbon is minimized by default on a Virtual ViewX client. You can still use the ribbon while it is minimized, or you can expand the ribbon if required.

• The Alarm Banner is hidden by default on a Virtual ViewX client (providing that your User Account enables you to hide the Alarm Banner). This is by design, to provide more display space for viewing other Geo SCADA Expert displays, such as Mimics, Trends, and Queries Lists.
  (You can display the Alarm Banner by selecting the Alarm Banner command from the ViewX ribbon.)
• Audible alarms are not supported on a Virtual ViewX client.
• A Virtual ViewX client limits the display to the confines of the browser window. With a ViewX client you can drag and drop displays outside of the main window.
• You are restricted to having up to a maximum of 5 Geo SCADA Expert displays open simultaneously on a Virtual ViewX client (providing that your User Account provides Multi Document Interface access).
• A Virtual ViewX client does not support Startup Configuration files. (With a ViewX client you can use a Startup Configuration file to launch ViewX in a Multi-Monitor setup, or customize Window Container behavior.)
• Copy and paste limitations apply on a Virtual ViewX client (see Use Copy and Paste in Virtual ViewX).
• You can export the data from Queries and Trends using the Export command on the Edit Tab of the ViewX ribbon. This option is available in ViewX. It is also available on Virtual ViewX clients that run in Full Virtual ViewX mode. For more information, see Queries Lists and see Copy Trend Data to the Clipboard.
